Free Zoomy Ride Auckland

When I started writing this blog about free uber rides in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, it was always with knowledge that other ride share competitors would eventually launch in New Zealand. And now there is Zoomy, which is only available in Auckland and Wellington. Unlike Uber which is overseas owned, Zoomy is New Zealand owned, and offers lower commissions for drivers. The fees that Uber take go overseas, whilst the fees that Zoomy take stay here in New Zealand. If you’re a patriotic kiwi, then Zoomy is a good choice that supports your ethical and moral views.

The prices for Zoomy and Uber are very similar. There’s very little in it. I have found that more drivers are driving for Zoomy these days, and sometimes I’ve tried to order an Uber to find no cars in my area, whilst there were plenty on Zoomy – likely due to the lower commissions. I’ve gone from Karangahape Road to Green Bay Auckland (about $26), from lower Queen Street to Karangahape Road (about $7-$8), from mid Queen Street to Newmarket (about $13) and various other places in Auckland with Zoomy. All rides have been good, drivers have been friendly, and their cars have been clean.

Auckland Rates at time of writing are as follows: Base Charge $1.20, Service Fee $0.50, Cost per KM $1.30, Cost per minute $0.30, Cost minimum $5.00, Waiting time per minute $0.20, Cancellation Penalty $10.00, Auckland Airport pickup $5.00, Auckland Airport drop off $2.00. These rates are VERY reasonable, and make travelling across Auckland very cost effective.

Going from Auckland Airport to Blockhouse Bay was around $28 which was excellent value. It will cost you a similar amount to Auckland CBD / Skycity / Customs St etc depending on traffic.
